We Do Good!
Doing good for the community is important to our members. Helping young girls develop and expand their interest in STEM, awarding scholarships to young women, and helping to make the community more aware of Equal Pay Day are just part of what we do.
Tech Trek Central Oregon – Being involved in AAUW’s Tech Trek camp ensures that women will not be excluded from STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs. Take a look at Central Oregon’s Tech Trek website to learn more about this exciting and challenging camp for eighth grade girls. http://techtrek-centralor.aauw.net/. You will be amazed at all the things Tech Trek camp addresses in this education packed week.
Scholarships – Over the past 25 years AAUW Bend, through the Charles and Helen Weil Memorial Scholarship, has distributed almost $307,000 in scholarships to 59 young women. Established in 1992, the Weil merit scholarship is awarded to Central Oregon Community College women students with a GPA of 3.50 and above, who are pursuing their baccalaureate studies. Applicants are screened initially by the Office of Student Access and Completion. Awardees are selected by the Weil Scholarship Committee of the Bend AAUW. Applications for the Charles and Helen Weil Memorial Scholarship may be made online at www.oregonstudentaid.gov after completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . Application deadline is March 1 of each year.
Equal Pay Day – In support of Equal Pay Day, we have had a table downtown in front of Bellatazza Coffee and at NW Crossing at Sparrow Bakery where we pass out materials and talk to people about this symbolic day when women’s earnings finally catch up to men’s earning from the prior year.
